FEELING TIRED, WHAT IS UNDER EYE FILLER?
Whether from aging, loss of volume, lack of sleep, or simply genetics, dark circles underneath the eyes are a very common occurrence. Even the most healthy, well-rested individuals can have dark circles or streaks. Under eye creams are necessary for maintaining the skin texture & laxity and can improve dark circles, but dermal fillers are another option to address volume loss. It may be time to consider tear trough filler.
The tear trough is the under eye area between the lower eyelid and the upper cheek. A deep tear trough can give the appearance of dark streaks or accentuate eye bags (fat pads). Deep tear trough depressions can be caused by a few factors:
- Volume deficiency in the upper cheek due to aging
- Genetics
- Excessive sun exposure
- Negative lifestyle factors such as smoking
- Consistent lack of sleep
- Regular exercise
- Weight loss
The goal of tear trough filler is to improve volume in the under eye region and give the area a more rested and youthful appearance.
What is Tear Trough Filler?
Tear trough filler, also known as under eye filler, is a non-surgical injection procedure performed by an experienced medical professional. This filler adds volume beneath the eyelids and decreases shadows and indentations. Tear trough filler is not permanent, but results can last up to one year after injection.
Fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring gel-like substance produced in the body. Hyaluronic acid helps in maintaining volume and moisture under the skin. It has also been shown in research studies to slow down the physiological process of aging in the area.
Key benefits of tear trough filler treatment include:
- Reduces dark circles beneath the lower eyelids
- Adds volume and helps smooth the texture beneath the lower eyelid
- Improves general skin quality
- Rejuvenation of tired eyes
Are You The Right Candidate For Tear Trough Filler?
Anybody with mild to moderate sagging beneath the lower eyelid and/or discoloration beneath the eyelid due to deep tear troughs is a candidate for under eye filler. Tear trough filler is also significantly less invasive compared to surgical procedures like fat grafting and fat repositioning.
Tear trough filler results are seen almost immediately, and most patients will typically see final settled results once the swelling resolves. However, it’s important to remember that tear trough filler treatment isn’t permanent, it typically last up to one year and will gradually wear off over time as the body naturally absorbs the hyaluronic acid.
Your provider will determine how many sessions are needed, which is directly related to the amount of volume loss, usually no more than one syringe is injected in one session. The under eye is a precarious area and overfilling is highly discouraged. The volume loss of the cheeks must be addressed first with filler, before treating the tear troughs.
Are There Any Side Effects With Tear Trough Filler?
Tear trough filler treatment is relatively safe with an experienced provider, side effects like bruising, swelling or redness of the skin are common. These side effects are temporary and should resolve after a few days.
However, more serious complications may occur in the form of:
- Filler becoming lumpy/uneven
- Overfilled under eyes
- Bluish discoloration of the skin, also referred to as Tyndall effect
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Edema or swelling around the eyes
- Blindness resulting from Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO)
